My mother just shared a bit of world news with me that I did not need to know. I'm all shaken up and literally this far from crying. I truly wish she hadn't told me this. Of course, now I feel the need to share my misery...

In Poland, three young men tied a husky to a car on a choke chain and drove until the dog was beheaded. They were sentenced to ten months in jail. 10 months! I'm glad we live in a world where animal cruelty is punishable by law, but personally I'd like to impale those motherfuckers on hot iron rods. The worst thing about learning about this is that similar things happen around the world all the time. We just don't hear about them.

*takes a deep breath and tries to convince herself not to go on some mad killing spree*

......that's just....oh gawd. :( *shudder* If they are okay doing this to a dog, I wonder what they would do to another person. Gawd. 10 months is definitely not enough.

Imagine how these people treat humans if they can do this to animals?

Before christmas 2 local teenage footballers tossed a living koala and her infant out of their ute at 100km/h
the truck driver who caught them at it picked up the animals (both still alive - kind of makes your wonder how they became endangered) knee-capped the feral blokes with his tyre iron when they pulled over to pee then told the police what he and they had done.
The boys face $25 000 fines for abuse of each animal + jail time.

The police let the truck driver go with a warning and a pat on the back.

How awful is it that all I can think upon seeing this is, "At least they didn't do it to a person." Because people do shit like that to one another. They do worse things, and it all makes me so nauseous I can't think. The things to come are gruesome and not worth knowing, but I can't stop them coming back to me. My mind is flooded with two men and a woman raping an infant. A fucking infant, six months old at the most, orally, vaginally, anally. How? How does that ever compute as the thing to do. I can't think of a torture suitable enough for those people.

It's sad to be desensitized to animal cruelty. I think it's awful but I don't have the emotional reaction I would have before learning more about what people are capable of. *shudders*

Yes, people do horrible things to people, but that doesn't make me any less sensitive to animal cruelty. Just because humans have superior cognitive ability doesn't mean we're in any way better than other animals. They feel pain just like we do. And they're innocent. We're not. Every single one of us contributes daily to the destruction of our world, a fact that has, unfortunately, made me a bit insensitive towards the sufferings of people. Infant torture is a horrible thing, I agree. But my honest opinion is that animal torture is just as bad, and the punishment for it should be the same.

I definitely understand your take on it, and I do think it's a shortcoming of mine that I can't feel as much for animals as I can for people (though I certainly do feel for animals—just not as intensely).

I don't perceive humans as inherently superior. Our species has evolved further, and to what end? With intelligence comes corruption. Dolphins are commonly perceived to be among the most intelligent animals and they've been known to gang rape one another. The more a creature perceives pleasure as a personal goal rather than behaving on instinct and preservation, the more likely that creature is to find deviant, destructive forms of pleasure.

In a tiny way my cat does this when he makes sure I'm watching him as he pushes the water glass off the table. He gets pleasure from misbehaving. All of us do. It's how we carve out a sense of control in our own lives. But the broken, fucked up among us only experience that pleasure through extreme acts.

I can't categorize better or worse in the animal vs. human debate. I think it's the same drive, but most people still have that categorization of human>animal. Is Emmett Till or Matthew Shepard different from an animal? That's the fucked up part (among many different varieties of fucked up parts). The people who attacked both of those boys did it because they qualified them as animals. As if that made it okay.

I don't really buy into the "animals are innocent and humans are awful" argument (not to simplify what you're saying) because I have no god and when I'm being honest with myself no free will. I believe in a determinist universe and I firmly believe in evolution. All species exist as they've been bred to. I think a lot of things about how the human race defiles the earth, about how Republicans can even exist without having to confront their own goddamn hypocrisy, but every trait in every part of our species is there for some unknown reason. Because at one point it was useful, and maybe we just need to wait a few more generations for us to evolve out of our destructive habits. Needs must, and all that.

Erm... a bit of a deviation from your original post, but relevant, I think.

I didn't mean to turn it into an animals are good and humans are evil argument. My parrots, like your cat, also seem to find pleasure in misbehaving. One of them has, on occasion, pretended to be nice to strangers so she could get closer and bite them in the face. The point is that we are capable of doing much more harm and more twisted things. We also have the ability to decide whether or not we're going to give in to our desire to hurt other people and/or animals, and yet some of still do it. That's what I think makes us "worse."

That's disgusting, what people do just because they can. There was an incident back where I'm from a while ago where these two boys broke into someones home and stuck their cat in the microwave. Horrible. I'm sorry, I'm spreading more bad news, but it really sets the blood boiling.

That's awful :( I heard about an old lady doing that to try and dry her dog after a bath, because she didn't know any better. thought that was bad enough.

If you're going to dry a dog, why not start with a blowdryer at first if need be?? Common sense!
THough, my puppy hated the blowdryer, so we just towel dried him. <3
