a_clairvoyante, whose prompts were candy apples (substituted here with the British term 'toffee apples'), firs, and hotchpotch.
Why did he have to do it right before Christmas?
The letter, which had arrived by owl in the morning, was clutched tightly in Harry's hand. Already it boasted the deep wrinkles of having been carried inside a back pocket and periodically unfolded and read throughout the day. Harry knew its lines by heart.
Harry,
You were right. It was I who destroyed our relationship with my neediness and fits of jealousy. You've no idea how much I regret every foul word that has come out of my mouth. I'm so sorry.
I miss you, Harry. I've missed you ever day since you left. Come back?
Yours forever,
Draco
Harry sighed. He'd missed Draco, too – as much as he'd tried to convince himself he didn't. He'd done a fine job of throwing himself into his work so he wouldn't have to feel, and he would have kept it up if Draco hadn't written to him. If he hadn't written to him now.
They'd fallen in love at exactly this time last year. It was so difficult to pretend he’d be all right alone, when every single decoration, every scent and sound associated with the holidays reminded him of what was missing in his life. The evergreen smell of his Christmas tree took him back to the aisles of firs they had walked between, holding hands, as he'd helped Draco pick out just the right one. The toffees he'd received as a gift at work, now lying among a hotchpotch of dirty dishes, unread mail, and receipts on the low table, reminded him of how they'd bought toffee apples they'd bought before going home that night. Draco had still tasted of them in bed.
Harry clutched the letter more tightly now, his eyes locking on the Floo powder on the mantelpiece. He didn't know how much longer he could resist.
