Here's a review I got for HP and the Dysfunctional Malfoy prick:
(I have nothing against this reviewer. I'm just using their review as an example of something I see fairly often in the fandom that annoys me)
"a nicely written story, despite the grammer errors and Draco's unbelivable attitude towards Potions or Potter. A very nice story overall, and update soon"
I'm not complaining about the comment on grammatical errors. I know there are plenty because I usually don't use a beta and I'm too impatient to look the story over very carefully (a bad habit I need to overcome)But some people's sensitivity in regards to what is believable/unbelievable in fanfiction irritates me. How believable is Harry and Draco shagging in the first place? If we want to stay so true to cannon, we might as well forget the sex and have Draco spewing enless insults while Harry sits there going, "Er..."
Now, I know there are many stories where the portrayal of the characters is very true to canon despite the gay!sex, and I congratulate the authors of those stories. But HP and DMP is the kind of story that just couldn't be without making the character/situations unbelievable. The whole premise is unrealistic. I've certainly never heard of a guy who can only get an erection when around/thinking about one person. Personally, I think the fandom would be boring if every story was true to canon. And I won't even get started on how believable fantasy is in the first place.

Date: 2006-06-01 06:56 am (UTC)the only 'unbelievable' parts of some stories that bother me is either that a character/plot is completely unbelievable out of context/in real life, to the point of annoyance, like a god-like-hero-harry, or a discustingly-submissive-draco, but that would bother me in any story, not anything relating to HP canon

Date: 2006-06-01 10:33 pm (UTC)well, i think it's a give-and-take with that, really. I mean, unless the story is ABOUT how these canonical characters could get together, then it's like "ok, i'm willing to let it slide that it doesn't make sense that they're together/like each other/whatever" but alot of times, those people NEED teh detail on the other end.
"i'll give you harry/draco without much of a fuss," they may say, "but you gotta give me believability in other aspects of their characterizations."
like, for me, even... I am willing to believe Harry loves piece-of-shite, racist prat!Draco... but HArry and Draco need to be true-to-form in other aspects... it's like i give the author something and the author gives me something...
i guess... i dunno...
but that does make the second person that you've mentioned questioning the Potion scene... I need to read it and see what I think... they may just be alittle TOO demanding.
