Naturally, most Draco fans have theories about what will happen to our favorite snarky blond. I want to know yours. Take this poll, and feel free to elaborate in comments :)
I said no to the first 3 (and 'i wish' for the last of course!) but I'd like to explain what I mean. I don't think Draco will play a large role, switch sides, or die b/c I'm not sure we'll see him at all. He technically failed his Voldie mission, so he won't be keen to hang around the Dark Lord anymore, but he has no reason to seek solace from the light side b/c of completion of said mission anyway... so long in short... he's gonna flee, probably with his mum. Which is fine w/ me b/c it means he's still alive and there's plenty of room for "they meet again" fic post book 7! Or all of this could just be wishful thinking...
Hmm, I see your point. It makes sense, and my sister would probably agree with you... but I tend to think that he'll play a somewhat bigger role. I think his character was too importantt too just disappear. Maybe not. We may not hear about him through most of book seven, but I'm sure he'll at least turn up near the end.
I just have a very foreboding feeling about his fate. I think he (and not Harry) will die...
yeah, I hear ya. Like I said, probably wishful thinking. If he's gone, he can't die. Because in all reality, I think if he plays a role, JK will kill him, which makes me very sad. I agree that his character is important; he has been an absolute constant in Harry's life thus far. I think it would be really stupid of her to kill him though; I know she'd be thinking she's showing everyone what happens when you make the wrong choices, but it would be a much better lesson to have him switch sides. Prove that the choices really are what make us who we are, like she had Dumbledore say. Anyhoo... I just hope he doesn't die. :)
I think JK has spent way too much time building Draco up as a character (esp in book 6) to have him disappear in the last book. I think he clearly is going to play a role, and I really believe he is going to turn to the good. I think this for a few reasons: one is the bathroom scene in book 6 (where Harry found him crying and then hexed him). Why bother to humanize him like that if he is just going to be ignored later? And she made a point to mention that Harry felt sorry for Draco, both in that scene and in the scene where Dumbledore dies. JK is very skilled at foreshadowing, and I think this scene was very important. And Draco is now fleeing with Snape, who (despite all appearances to the contrary now) I still think is good. Snape will be an influence on Draco, especially now that Draco realizes just what service to the Dark Lord is all about. Maybe I'm nuts, but I don't think Draco is going to die either. I think he could, but I don't think he will. I feel certain that none of the Trio will die (I think fans would just rebel against that, and JK probably knows it). But I agree with the above reviewer that it would be a poor lesson indeed, if Draco were to turn to the Light just to be killed off. As if mistakes can never be forgiven. As for the last question, the real answer is,of course, no, but I can dream, can't I?
I agree with you. Book 6 totally changed my ideas about Draco. If Draco does not turn to the good side, it would be pointless to have him crying in the bathroom w/Myrtle, and thten lower his wand in the tower scene. JK even said that Draco wouldn't have killed Dumbledore.
But I also found this quote, which worries me slightly:
MA: What does it do to you to see a character that you love, for people to express sheer hate -
ES: Or vice versa.
JKR: It amuses me. It honestly amuses me. People have been waxing lyrical [in letters] about Draco Malfoy, and I think that's the only time when it stopped amusing me and started almost worrying me. I'm trying to clearly distinguish between Tom Felton, who is a good looking young boy, and Draco, who, whatever he looks like, is not a nice man. It’s a romantic, but unhealthy, and unfortunately all too common delusion of — delusion, there you go — of girls, and you [nods to Melissa] will know this, that they are going to change someone. And that persists through many women's lives, till their death bed, and it is uncomfortable and unhealthy and it actually worried me a little bit, to see young girls swearing undying devotion to this really imperfect character, because there must be an element in there, that "I'd be the one who [changes him]." I mean, I understand the psychology of it, but it is pretty unhealthy. So, a couple of times I have written back, possibly quite sharply, saying [Laughter], "You want to rethink your priorities here."
As for Draco dying, I just have a bad feeling. Maybe its just anxiety because I'd hate to see him die. I guess it makes more sense that either he dies on the bad side, or live after turning to the good side...
I absolutely don't think that Draco will die on the bad side. I think that there is a possibility that he will be a "sacrificial lamb" after turning to the good side. I'm hoping that won't happen. I think it would be a better lesson to show that someone can make mistakes (even grave ones) and still be forgiven. Despite what Jo said in that interview, she did go to pains to make Draco sympathetic in book 6. Also, clearly, he loves his family and wants to protect them. And he has been brought up under their evil influence (esp that of his father). Which helps to explain (not excuse) his bigoted attitudes and arrogance. I think he has been brought down many pegs by Dumbledore's kindness to him, and it has to have changed him. Guess we'll have to wait until next summer to find out!
I think we'll see quite a bit from Draco in book 7 and that he'll switch sides. And I hope he won't die - if one has to, I guess it'll be Snape, if he's on Voldemort's side or not.
