(no subject)

Do you hate any particular name so much that you refuse to read a story/novel with a character with that name? I do. Today, I went to the bookstore with a friend, and I thought about buying a new book, since I'm almost finished with Elizabeth Kostova's "The Historian" (Great read, by the way.) I picked up "Bitten" and it looked intriguing, so I opened up the book to read a few excerpts and see if I'd like it. When I did, I saw the name Clay pop out of the page at me. Ladies and gentlemen, I DESPISE the name Clay (no offense to any Clays who might be reading this journal). However, I really wanted to buy the book, so I decided that if this...Clay isn't a major character, I might be able to tolerate it. I turned to random pages all over the book, and on every page it said, Clay, Clay, Clay. Ugh!!! I ended up putting the book back, which is disappointing because I was so set on it. Have any of you read "Bitten"? Is it good? Should I try to overcome my issue with the name Clay. LOL, I must sound crazy.

...But I'm not the only one. When I first started reading HP slash, I came across an... interesting story on AFF.net. Someone was posting it for their friend, and made a note that her friend hated the name Draco, so she was going to call him Alan in the fic. The story got a bunch of reviews saying "tell you friend she can't just change Draco's name because she doesn't like it." Needless to say, I coulnd't read the story. I don't have a problem with the name Alan, I guess, but I jsut couldn't picture Draco when he was always being referred to as Alan.

Anyways, I'll just go hide now before you guys call the men in white coats =P

I've read "Bitten"--as well as the other books in the Women of the Otherworld series--and let me tell you, it is *worth* it. Clay is *not* the main character of any of the stories; however, he is heavily featured in at least three of them. Elena--the featured character in "Bitten"--is the main character in "Stolen," and in the new book "Broken." However, there are three other books in the series ("Dime Store Magic," "Industrial Magic," and "Haunted") where two other women are featured, and Clay is usually only a bare mention in them. If you really can't stand the name Clay, I suggest you read "Dime Store Magic" first--just to see if you even like the series.
